September 2013 - Sarmizegetusa, Romania
Sarmizegetusa was the capital of the Dacian civilization, until it was destroyed by the Romans in AD 106 (and with it the Dacian civilization). High in the mountains with paved roads and running water, it was a pretty great barbarian civilization.

The drive up to Sarmizegetusa was an awful washboard dirt road full of giant pits and rocks. Meanwhile, 2000 years ago Sarmizegetusa had nice paved roads through these mountains.
