Birds About
June 2012 - Leiden, The Netherlands

A quick day trip to Leiden.

The characteristic Dutch canals
The characteristic Dutch canals
One of a few windmills in the city, next to the classic Dutch drawbridge
Hooglandse kerk, probably the most epic church front I have ever seen. The picture doesn't nearly do justice to how large it is, but look at the size relative to the people standing in front of it!

The Burcht, an old fort in the middle of the city that goes back to the 12th century
The old entrance to the city, from back when it was walled
A random Teepee behind the museum

The main street shopping area
Which includes fresh stroopwafels!
The Herring roll, literally a roll with raw Herring in it, is a specialty in the Netherlands. We had to try it, but it was pretty gross.
