May 2008 - Galați
There are two Roman fortresses near Galați - this because of the Danube, which was an important sea route through Europe. The first is across the Danube from Galați, about 8km inland. The second is called Noviodunum. It was a naval base and is about 30km east, right on the Danube.
This is a scene that I do not believe has changed much in the last 2000 years - a shephard with his sheep, and in the back left, that hill are the ruins of a Roman fortress

Galaţi from a nearby hill. The steel mill is almost the same size as Galaţi!

Now to the naval base, which is near the town of Isaccea

It was still a 1km walk from Isaccea. This house was long the way

It's an active archeological site. The good news is that it's quite large; the bad news is that only one part of it has been excavated! Most of it is still just a mound of earth
|
The excavated wall at Noviodunum. Right behind this wall is the Danube, and on the other side of the Danube is the Ukraine |
